There’s 200 years between House of the Dragon and the events of Game of Thrones.

“A lot can happen in 200 years,” says co-creator Ryan Condal.

The Iron Throne does not look like howGame of Thronesfans remember it.

As showrunnersRyan CondalandMiguel Sapochnikexplain, it’s partly to get a bit closer to howGame of ThronescreatorGeorge R.R.

Martindescribed the throne in the books which is still impractical when it comes to actually shooting the series.

Rather, we designed it and then kind of worked backward."

There’s nothing comfy about it.

“Originally, in the books, it’s actually about 10-15 feet high,” Sapochnik says.

The backward thinking also helped them explain the change within the context of the show itself.

Meaning the original Iron Throne design forGame of Thronesis still alive within the one forHouse of the Dragon.

“We have not thrown out the original design, but instead augmented it.”

The actual reason, Condal says, was becauseGame of Thronescreators David Benioff and D.B.

Weiss didn’t want the set to feel dated.

“A lot of stuff happens in 200 years.”
