So, when Gunn started drafting plans forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol.
After all, Gunn says, if you consider theGuardianstrilogy as three chapters of the same story, thenVol.
3(out May 5, 2023) is the climactic final act.

“This is the big one,” the writer-director adds.
“This is where things really happen.
It’s been a long and complicated journey for the Guardians and for Gunn.
But the Guardians have always been at the top of his mind, and afterVol.
2,Gunn felt their story was still “one thousand percent” unfinished.
I feel like nobody would be able to tell his full story if it wasn’t me.”
But the foul-mouthed raccoontakes the spotlight for the first time inVol.
3,as he’s forced to reckon with his traumatic origin story.
“To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of theGuardiansmovies,” Gunn adds.
“From the beginning, it has been rooted in who he is as a character.
I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians.
They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together.
I just think that his is more extreme than others.”

“I felt called to it, if that makes any sense.
So I feel very good [aboutVol.
And I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I had all these people around me making it.
It’s the biggest blessing of my life.”
