I had a lot of questions about all of that stuff and what it all meant.
Wes loves to talk about character nuance.”
In addition to being a renowned director, Anderson is also an encyclopedic cinephile in his own right.
“He has a lot of references, of course,” Johansson says.
“We were trying to understand together: Who is this woman?
What’s her jot down?
Who is she similar to from that time?”
“She’s formidable and vulnerable at the same time and just really captivating.
“She’s had an illustrious career, but she’ll be working forever,” Johansson says.
Her legacy will be as one of the greats.”
Remember how Anderson first told her about the project amidst 2020 quarantines?
Well, by the timeAsteroid Citywas finally moving into production, Johansson was pregnant.
So she found some time and ended up shooting her scenes just eight weeks after giving birth.
“Jason was so helpful,” Johansson says.
My brain was mostly functioning, but he would help me run lines at any moment.
He was constantly present and supportive, and I needed him very much.
I would say ‘kindly don’t go too far away from me.’
I was trying to stay alert, but he was just great.
We work very similarly."
His first film performance was as the star of Anderson’sRushmorein 1998.
“He can underplay things so well, and he’s very precise.
