Sheehan founded the Irish rock band in 2001 with frontman Danny O’Donoghue.

Mark Sheehan, the lead guitarist and co-founder of Irish rock band the Script, has died.

The band announced Sheehan’s death on Friday.

“The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.”

Sheehan founded the act in 2001 with frontman Danny O’Donoghue.

Drummer Glen Power rounded out the group, which toured in the U.S. as recently as last year.

At the time, O’Donoghue toldSunday Worldthat the “engine” of the band simply needed some rest.

“He took a little bit of time off.

You get refreshed, then you come back with a new zest for life.

The band iscurrently scheduledto open forP!nkon several dates in June.

Sheehan is survived by his wife, Rina, and three children.
